Payment Delays That Have Nothing to Do With Crypto

Several delays blamed on crypto are ordinary banking mechanics. Knowing which is which saves a support conversation.

When a conversion takes two days, the crypto leg is almost never the reason. Four ordinary mechanics account for most of it.

The cut-off

Payments submitted after the daily cut-off process the next working day. Published, universally ignored, and responsible for most single-day delays.

The weekend

Interbank settlement pauses. A Friday evening payout banks on Monday whatever the venue did on Saturday.

The crypto side continued running, which is what makes the delay feel like a failure rather than a calendar.

The correspondent chain

Cross-border payments pass through intermediaries, each with its own hours and its own checks. Two days is normal and is nobody’s fault.

The venue sent it; a bank in the middle is holding it.

The review

Amounts above an institution’s threshold are checked by a person, in business hours. This adds a day and occasionally more.

A first payment from a new counterparty is reviewed more often than a subsequent one.

How to tell which applies

Ask the venue for the timestamp of the outbound payment and the reference. If the payment left promptly, everything after is banking.

That single question resolves most disputes about who is responsible.

What is genuinely a crypto delay

Network confirmations, which are minutes on most chains and longer during congestion. And venue review of an incoming deposit, which is a compliance step rather than a technical one.

Both are measured in minutes to hours, not days.

Why this matters commercially

A business planning around settlement needs to know which clocks apply. Planning around the crypto leg produces a schedule that is wrong by two days.

What to plan around instead

The payout cut-off and the banking calendar. A platform that issues a statement you can file publishes the first, and the second is the same one every other payment in the business follows.

Collect & Exchange, which operates under a licence, gives a reference at the moment of payout, which is what turns a two-day wait from an argument into an ordinary banking timeline.
