Bank Account Closures: The Reasons Given and the Real Ones

Closure letters say very little. The patterns behind them are consistent and mostly avoidable.

By Timur Abenov · ·2 min

A closure notice usually cites a commercial decision and nothing else. Banks are rarely permitted to say more, which leaves the customer guessing.

What the letter means

That the bank has decided the relationship costs more to maintain than it earns. Monitoring cost is part of that calculation.

It is not an accusation and it is not appealable in most cases.

Pattern one: unexplained flows

Regular transfers to or from parties the bank cannot identify, with no commercial explanation. The most common pattern by a wide margin.

Every individual transaction may be legitimate. The pattern is what triggers review.

Pattern two: inconsistency with the stated purpose

An account opened for personal use carrying commercial volume, or a company account whose activity does not match the declared business.

Banks monitor against the declared purpose. Divergence is the signal.

Pattern three: unanswered requests

A request for documentation that went unanswered, or answered partially over several rounds. Non-response is treated as a risk indicator in its own right.

This is the most avoidable of the three.

Pattern four: counterparty risk

Payments involving entities the bank has concerns about, including platforms that are unlicensed or under scrutiny elsewhere.

The customer inherits the counterparty’s reputation, which is why counterparty choice is a banking decision rather than only a commercial one.

What to do when a review starts

Respond completely and quickly, with documents rather than explanations. Ask what specifically is needed before sending everything.

Most reviews end here.

What to do when closure is notified

Open a replacement before the notice period expires. Transfer standing arrangements. Request a reference letter, which some banks provide and which helps the next application.

Do not argue the decision; use the time.

How to avoid the whole category

Declare the purpose accurately, keep activity consistent with it, use counterparties the bank can identify, and answer requests in one complete submission.

A regulated counterparty whose name appears on a register removes pattern four entirely. Exchanges that keep records a bank will accept make pattern three a same-day answer, and Collect & Exchange, which operates under a licence, settles as an identifiable company rather than an unexplained cross-border credit.
