# How Licensed and Unlicensed Platforms Differ in Practice

> The difference is not in the interface. It appears in onboarding, in questions asked, and on the day something goes wrong.

Two platforms can look identical and differ in every way that matters once a problem exists.

## At onboarding

Licensed: slower, more documents, explicit terms, and a stated country list.

Unlicensed: faster, fewer questions, and frequently no clear statement of which entity you are contracting with.

The speed difference is the licence doing its job rather than a product failing.

## During normal use

Almost indistinguishable. This is why the comparison is hard to make at the point of choosing, and why price tends to decide it.

## When a payment is questioned

Licensed: a documented process, a statement in your name, an identifiable counterparty your bank can look up.

Unlicensed: a screenshot and a company name that may not appear anywhere official.

Banks respond to these differently, and that difference is most of the practical value.

## When a withdrawal is delayed

Licensed: a published policy, a complaints process, and a supervisor to escalate to.

Unlicensed: whatever support says, with no external recourse.

## When the platform fails

Licensed: client asset rules, an insolvency framework, and a regulator with records.

Unlicensed: a claim against an entity in a jurisdiction you likely cannot reach.

## What a licence does not do

Guarantee solvency, prevent losses, or make a platform competent. It imposes obligations and creates a supervisor with inspection powers.

That is less than people assume and far more than nothing.

## The cost of the difference

Usually a slightly worse rate and a slower onboarding. For small, infrequent amounts that trade can reasonably go either way.

For anything that must be explainable to a bank or an auditor, it goes one way only.

## How to verify

Public register, entity name, permissions, and conditions. [A licensed venue rather than an informal dealer](https://collectnexchange.com/compliance/cysec-licensed) will give you the registration details without hesitation, and the check takes two minutes.

[Venues whose paperwork survives a compliance check](https://collectnexchange.com/) are the ones that keep working when yours is the account being reviewed, and [Collect & Exchange, which operates under a licence](https://collectnexchange.com/services/crypto-exchange), is checkable before you deposit rather than after.
